What Android Phone Should I Get

Thinking about getting a new Android phone but not sure which to buy? Well, it’s a world full of different Android phones, so don’t worry, this is a common problem that a lot of people face.

My name is Shaibu and you’re on Shu’s Techs, the website where I do the research and you get the results.

Today, I’m going to help you choose the Android phone that is best for you, based on what you want… so let’s begin.

When choosing an Android phone there are a few things you have to consider based on what you want, some of them include:

  • Battery
  • Performance (or speed)
  • Cameras
  • Build Quality
  • Budget Phones (pocket friendliness)
  • Premium Phones

There are so many other factors that can determine what Android phone you should get, but the list above has the basic things to consider.

Now that we know the things to consider, we have to talk more about each point on the list.

After that, I’m going to recommend some phones (best to my knowledge) in each category you can check out.

Sounds good? Great, let’s begin… for the second time.

LET’S TALK ABOUT ANDROID PHONES WITH GREAT BATTERY LIFE

The batteries on Android phones vary a lot. There are phones out there that are in the 3,000mAh to 3,500mAh range, while there are others that are in the 4,000mAh to 6,000mAh range.

Now with batteries, the bigger the better.

If you are a very heavy phone user, you’ll need a phone with at least 4,000mAh, but if you’re not, any phone below that amount is fine.

I’m going to assume battery is your major concern (or one of your major concerns), so I’m going to give you a list of all the phones that are 4,000mAh and above.

I’ll try not to get you even more confused by keeping the list short so expect to get around 5 to 7 recommendations in each category. It’s possible to get more than 50 devices in each category.

But that wouldn’t be helpful.

REALME 3 PRO

If you decide to go for the Realme 3 Pro, expect to get a 4,045mAh battery. With this amount of battery juice, you will be able to carry out a lot of tasks and end the day with a significant amount left.

Charging the phone with its 20W charger goes from 0% to 50% in 30 minutes. So yes, the phone supports fast charging.

Other features include:

  • Android 9 (Pie)
  • 1080 x 2340 LCD Screen
  • 25 MP Selfie Camera
  • 16 MP + 5 MP Main Camera
  • Octa-core (2x 2.2GHz & 6x 1.7GHz) CPU
  • Adreno 616 GPU
  • 4GB / 6GB RAM
  • 64GB / 128GB Internal

SAMSUNG GALAXY A70s

With a bigger battery than the Realme 3 Pro, the Samsung Galaxy A70s takes over with a 4,500mAh battery.

This is even more ideal for you heavy users out there.

You also get fast charging on the phone with its 25W charger.

Other features include:

  • Android 9 (Pie)
  • 1080 x 2400 Super AMOLED
  • 32 MP Selfie Camera
  • 64 MP + 8 MP + 5 MP Main Camera
  • Octa-core (2×2.0 GHz Kryo 460 Gold & 6×1.7 GHz Kryo 460 Silver) CPU
  • Adreno 612 GPU
  • 6GB / 8GB RAM
  • 128GB Internal

REDMI NOTE 8 PRO

If you consider Redmi as a brand you want to go for, the Note 8 Pro also offers a 4,500mAh battery.

The phone actually does a good job of managing how the battery is being used. With this kind of power efficiency, expect to end your day with a good amount of battery left.

The phone comes with a 18W charger and charging for 30 minutes will get you from 0% to 40%.

Other features include:

  • Android 9.0 (Pie); MIUI 10

  • 20 MP Selfie Camera

ASUS ZENPHONE MAX PRO M1

The Asus Zenphone Max Pro M1 (I know, quite a mouthful), comes with a 5,000mAh battery. With this phone, expect to get the best out of all I’ve mentioned when it comes to overall battery life with heavy usage.

Only downside here is that the phone doesn’t support fast charging, but I guess you wouldn’t be too worried about that since you can end your day with a lot of battery left.

Charging the phone while you sleep is like a “reset” to 100% every day you wake up.

Other features include:

  • Android 8.1 (Oreo), upgradable to Android 9.0 (Pie)
  • 1080 x 2160 LCD Screen

ANDROID PHONES WITH THE BEST PERFORMANCE

You don’t want a phone that is slow, slow phones are going to frustrate you especially when you find yourself in a situation where you need to take out your phone real fast and do something.

A slow phone will take a few seconds to unlock itself, take forever to start up an app and if it manages to start the app, using the app will be really annoying because it will lag a lot.

I’m not even going to talk about playing games on a slow phone (I can already feel the pain).

Maybe performance should have been the first item on the list because it is the most important aspect of phones these days. Well, we are here anyway.

So, if you’re into multitasking, you know, playing games, using a lot of social media apps, browsing and streaming videos all the time, then you’re going to need a phone with really good performance.

When it comes to performance on Android devices, what you should be considering on the phone before you take out your money is the phone’s chipset.

This is when you get to hear terms like “Snapdragon”, “Exynos”, “MediaTek”, “RAM”, “Operating System” etc.

If you’re non-techy, don’t worry, I’m not going in too deep.

What I suggest you look for is a phone with at least 4GB of RAM, this will give you enough room to run a lot of applications on your phone.

You don’t have to worry about the Operating System because most phones come with the latest Operating System. But if you must know, getting a phone running on Android 9 (Pie) is recommended if you want to be able to install recent apps and games.

Android 10 is slowly getting popular now so watch out for phones that will be coming with the Operating System.

You are also going to need a phone with a fast processor.

A phone with at least a 2.00 GHz processor will do you good for now. Getting a phone with a processor above that is recommended if you plan to use the phone long term.

Enough talking, here is a list of phones you can get if performance is your major concern (not that it shouldn’t be in the first place).

REDMI NOTE 7 PRO

On the Redmi Note 7 Pro, you get a Snapdragon 675 chipset. It has an Octa-core 2.0GHz CPU, an Adreno 612 GPU and either 4GB of RAM or 6GB of RAM.

With these specs, performance on the phone will be reasonably good. Sure, you’re not going to get apps lagging (or slowing down) and you can play most games without issues.

But, don’t expect the best graphics here when it comes to games, for that you’ll need a better GPU and processor.

This phone is for those people who want to have a basic experience in games and overall performance on phones for a low price.

You’re not going to suffer from lags, but you’ll not be getting that high speed and performance.

Other features include:

  • Android 9.0 (Pie), upgradable to Android 10; MIUI 11
  • 1080 x 2340 LCD Screen
  • 13 MP Selfie Camera
  • 48 MP + 5 MP Main Camera
  • Octa-core (2×2.0 GHz Kryo 460 Gold & 6×1.7 GHz Kryo 460 Silver) CPU
  • Adreno 612 GPU
  • 4GB / 6GB RAM
  • 64GB / 128GB Internal

Get the Redmi Note 7 Pro now on Amazon | Jumia or Ali Express

OPPO F11 PRO

What you’ll be getting on the Oppo F11 Pro is a MediaTek Helio P70 chipset. It comes with a slightly higher Octa-core 2.1GHz CPU compared to the Redmi Note 7 Pro.

It also comes with a Mali-G72 GPU for handling games and all kinds of graphics.

You get the same RAM options here, 4GB or 6GB for all the multitasking you can think about.

Now talking about how the phone handles tasks, well, it’s just as good as the Redmi Note 7 Pro. Some phone enthusiasts argue that the Redmi Note 7 Pro handles tasks better than the Oppo F11 Pro.

From my knowledge of Android devices, I believe Snapdragon chipsets have always been the best, so I’m going to go with my guts and say the Redmi Note 7 Pro will be a slightly better performing phone compared to the Oppo F11 Pro.

You can always correct me if you think I’m wrong.

Other features include:

  • Android 9.0 (Pie), ColorOS 6
  • 6.53 inch 1080 x 2340 IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen
  • Octa-core (4×2.1 GHz Cortex-A73 and 4×2.0 GHz Cortex-A53) CPU
  • Mali-G72 MP3 GPU
  • 4GB / 6GB RAM
  • 64GB / 128GB Internal Storage
  • 16MP Front Camera
  • 48MP + 5MP Rear Camera

POCOPHONE F1

This is one of the best phones out there that offers really good performance at a very reasonable price.

The Pocophone F1 comes with a Snapdragon 845 chipset which has Octa-core 2.8GHz CPU and an Adreno 630 GPU.

In terms of RAM, you get two options 6GB and 8GB.

This phone will be able to handle anything you throw at it, flawlessly. I can’t even recommend this phone for those of you who only plan to use social media apps.

I would recommend this phone to all the heavy gamers out there. Is it PUB-G? Play it at the highest graphics.

You prefer Call of Duty Mobile? Well, good cause this phone was designed to help you kill people in the virtual world.

SAMSUNG GALAXY A70s

Samsung has been popularly accepted by a lot of people. This is not a big surprise since their products target different kinds of buyers.

You want a good phone but don’t have a lot of money to spend? Go for the mid-range Samsung products.

You want a better phone and think you can afford it? Go for the premium products.

Now with the Galaxy A70s, you’ll be getting an Octa-core 2.0GHz CPU on its Snapdragon 675 Chipset.

RAM options you’re getting here are 6GB and 8GB. This puts the Redmi Note 7 a little behind in terms of performance even though it has the same chipset.

Other features include:

  • Android 9 (Pie)
  • 1080 x 2400 Super AMOLED
  • 32 MP Selfie Camera
  • 64 MP + 8 MP + 5 MP Main Camera
  • Octa-core (2×2.0 GHz Kryo 460 Gold & 6×1.7 GHz Kryo 460 Silver) CPU

ONEPLUS 7T PRO

This is a beast of a phone when it comes to performance (performance is not the only significant aspect of this phone).

The OnePlus 7T Pro comes with a Snapdragon 855+ chipset. This gives you an Octa-core CPU clocking 2.96GHz, an Adreno 640 GPU and 8GB of RAM.

A 12GB of RAM model is also available but only in the UK… if I’m not wrong.

So talking about the actual performance of the OnePlus 7T Pro, well I can’t speak from experience because I personally haven’t used the phone.

But from all I’ve researched, it is a buttery smooth phone. It handles any kind of task really well and you can forget about lags for a really long time.

Now of course the phone is very expensive, but being that it is one of the best phones out there when it comes to performance, I have to put it on the list.

Other features include:

  • Android 10.0; OxygenOS 10.0.4
  • 1440 x 3120 Fluid AMOLED Screen
  • 16 MP Selfie Camera
  • 48 MP + 16 MP + 8 MP Main Camera
  • Octa-core (1×2.96 GHz Kryo 485 & 3×2.42 GHz Kryo 485 & 4×1.78 GHz Kryo 485) CPU
  • Adreno 640 GPU
  • 8GB / 12GB RAM
  • 256GB Internal

SAMSUNG GALAXY NOTE 10+

Like I earlier stated, Samsung products go from midrange to premium. With the Galaxy Note 10+ you get a Snapdragon 855 Chipset.

On it is an Octa-core 2.84GHz CPU, with an Adreno 640 GPU and 12GB of RAM.

There’s another model available that comes with an Exynos chipset but I’m not going to talk about that one.

Overall, expect some really impressive performance on this phone as you use it as your daily device.

Other features include:

  • Android 9.0 (Pie); One UI
  • 1440 x 3040 Dynamic AMOLED Screen
  • 10 MP Selfie Camera
  • 12 MP + 12 MP + 16 MP + TOF Main Camera
  • Octa-core (1×2.84 GHz Kryo 485 & 3×2.42 GHz Kryo 485 & 4×1.78 GHz Kryo 485) CPU
  • Adreno 640 GPU
  • 12GB RAM
  • 256GB / 512GB Internal

ANDROID PHONES WITH THE BEST CAMERA

Probably one of the factors I don’t consider when I am going for a new phone. As long as the phone has a decent camera, I don’t mind.

You on the other hand may want a phone that can do a lot of really cool things with its cameras, like they say “to each his own.”

There are a lot of Android phones out there with fantastic cameras. From Google’s Pixel phones that can see in the dark to the Huawei P30 pro that can see two years ahead of us… okay, just kidding. But the P30 Pro is a really good phone when it comes to its cameras.

Only problem is, these phones aren’t very pocket friendly.

Now, if you want a phone with basic but also decent cameras, most of the phones I’ve listed above can offer that, just check the amount of Megapixels you get in the camera section.

A phone with 13 Megapixels and above should be fine.

Note that having many pixels doesn’t always mean better pictures. I’ll suggest going for Samsung, Xiaomi, or Redmi products.

These are the phones I’ve had some experience with and I’m sure you’ll find their cameras to be more than enough for your basic photography.

If you’re willing to spend some money so you can get some really nice camera features, then here is a list of phones you should consider getting.

GOOGLE PIXEL 4 / 4 XL

When it comes to cameras, Google knows best.

For me, I don’t think cameras can really be described with texts so for this category, I’m going to just show you guys some YouTube videos that will help you better understand how good the cameras are.

ANDROID PHONES WITH THE BEST BUILD QUALITY

Okay so, when it comes to build quality, I’m going to focus on two things (hopefully they’ll be what you guys want).

The first thing is ruggedness.

This is for those of you that are a little bit clumsy with your phones, or just use your phones in harsh environments.

Your phone falls a lot? You keep your phone alongside other things like keys, makeup etc.? You’re not sure how your child got a hold of your phone? You’re into hiking and all forms of outdoor activities? You work in a harsh environment but want to have your phone with you?

Those are just a few questions I could come up with under 1 minute, but you should already know where I’m heading.

If your answer to some of those questions is yes, then you need a rugged phone.

A rugged phone is built to withstand drops, water, temperatures, dust… just think about all the harshest things a phone could go through, a rugged phone can handle most of them as long as they are not too severe.

Don’t go throwing the phone in flames and expect it to be fire resistant.

Although a rugged phone has a lot of protection, most of them aren’t that “good looking”. It’s like the phone’s case has a case.

I’m sure you get the picture.

If you don’t mind what the phone looks like, then fine go for a rugged phone.

If you do mind what a phone looks like but still want to be protected, then I’ll suggest going for a dust and water or splash resistant phone.

This way you can use the phone in situations where normal phones will not be used (like near pools, in the rain, in the shower etc.), but still show off your amazing looking device.

You just have to be careful because dropping phones like this can damage the phone.

This brings us to the second type of phone you should consider buying if you’re considering build quality.

So, I’m hoping you get the picture now, with that said, here is a list of phones you can get based on build quality.

The first 3 are rugged phones while the others are your water resistant phones that look good.

ULEFONE ARMOR 6

The Ulefone Armor 6 is a rugged device that is water and shock resistant and can handle high temperatures.

This is the phone you want to go for if you don’t want to be worried about accidental drops.

SAMSUNG GALAXY S10/S10 PLUS/S10e

All the Samsung S10’s of 2019 are water resistant, the best part is, you get a headphone jack as well.

Although expensive, they provide a really nice design you will be impressed by.

Check out my review for the Galaxy S10+ or the Galaxy S10e.

HUAWEI P30 PRO AND MATE 20 PRO

From having fantastic cameras to being water resistant, Huawei P30 pro and Mate 20 Pro are the Android phones you want to be looking at if you want a nicely designed product that you can use near water.

I’ve written a detailed review for both of them, so check them out by clicking the P30 Pro or the Mate 20 Pro.

BEST BUDGET ANDROID PHONES

Now of course some of the phones I’ve listed above cost a lot. It’s understandable, we want to minimize cost and still get the best out of a phone.

If a budget phone is what you can afford right now, know that you won’t miss out on any basic features most phones offer.

But you’re going to be left behind when it comes to the advance stuff like latest technologies and a lot of extra features.

Not going to talk about them, because I can already relate how it feels talking about the negatives, let’s talk positive.

The list below has some budget phones that are worth considering, they offer a lot of nice features and… let’s just have the list.

REDMI NOTE 7

With around $185 you can get the Redmi Note 7 (not the Pro). The phone comes with a Snapdragon 660 chipset. You get an octa-core processor clocking 2.2GHz.

I’ve written a review of the Redmi Note 7, you can check it out if you want.

NOKIA 4.2

The Nokia 4.2 offers some of nice features at an affordable price, from its dual main camera to the amount of RAM you get on the phone (it’s 3GB).

Although it is a good looking device, I will not recommend it if you’re a heavy user as its 3000mAh battery isn’t going to be enough for you.

If you’re not a heavy user, by all means, go for the Nokia 4.2.

Other features include:

  • Android 9.0 (Pie); Android One
  • 720 x 1520 LCD Screen
  • 8 MP Selfie Camera
  • 13 MP + 2 MP Main Camera

Finally, it comes with a 3,400mAh battery, so expect to charge the phone more than once a day, if you’re a heavy user.

Other features include:

SAMSUNG GALAXY S10/S10 PLUS

Finally, to end the whole list, I’m going to give it to the Samsung Galaxy S10’s (minus the S10e).

Samsung have and will always be one of the best phone producers out there. Sure you can put OnePlus up there too but Samsung is globally known.

With the S10’s, expect to have a nicely designed phone that looks and feels premium. With its cameras and performance, be rest assured that you won’t be missing out on the things you require from a premium device.
